Championing Cancer Champions

We are proud to be working alongside NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin ICB to deliver a cancer awareness raising project. Working in partnership with QUBE community resource charity we aim to reduce the number of people losing their lives to cancer in our region.

Cancer Screening Programmes

We know that many people do not take up their invitations for free screening and we want to get better at encouraging people to attend appointments, particularly those from the Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority communities. Research shows that uptake of cancer screening is often lower among this demographic than in the rest of the population.

NHS cancer screening programmes save thousands of lives every year but some types of cancer screening (bowel, breast and cervical cancer) are sensitive and difficult to talk about for some people.

Many people often do not know that cancer screening programmes exist and we want to raise general awareness about the programme and the importance of screening.

We know that it often helps to discuss any concerns or difficulties with someone you can relate to. With this in mind we want to partner with people in Telford from Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority backgrounds, to work together to improve awareness, understanding and acceptance of these screening programmes.

Visit the Cancer Champions website for more information.

Becoming Our Volunteer Cancer Champions

They will be trained and supported to help local people:

  • Understand why cancer screening is important
  • Overcome their concerns or fears about cancer screening
  • Tell us what would make it easier to take up cancer screening invitations
  • Recognise what would make it easier for people to take part

“Donating your time to us is an invaluable way of giving support. We couldn’t do the work we do without our amazing volunteers” – Naomi Atkin, CEO
